Trauma

Most people suffer some type of trauma in their lifetime. After a traumatic event, some develop post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) which can include recurrent and involuntary memories of the event, nightmares, flashbacks, feelings of sadness or detachment from others, inability to experience positive emotions, irritability, sleep disturbances and hypervigilance. The lifetime prevalence of PTSD is 6.8%. More than half of those with PTSD have moderate to severe impairment in daily functioning.
