Eating Disorders

Eating disorders include anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorders. They can include patterns of restrictive eating, purging, laxative use, excessive exercise or eating large amounts of food with marked guilt and lack of control. Eating disorders affect all genders, ethnicities and socioeconomics classes. It is common for those with an eating disorder to also struggle with depression, anxiety and/or bipolar disorder. It is estimated that over 30 million Americans will experience an eating disorder, yet only 30% of these people ever receive treatment. Treatment measures can vary depending on eating disorder type. Medications can be helpful in treating bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder and comorbid symptoms associated with anorexia nervosa such as depression, anxiety or mania.
