Insomnia

Insomnia is a type of sleep disorder characterized by difficulty falling asleep, difficulty staying asleep or early morning awakening causing significant distress or impairment in social/behavioral, academic or occupational functioning. Insomnia can be caused by shift work, acute stress, substance use or changes in environment. Insomnia is often caused by untreated depression, anxiety or mood disorder. Likewise, untreated insomnia is an independent risk factor for mental illness and substance abuse. The lifetime prevalence of chronic insomnia is 10%, whereas the prevalence of acute insomnia is up to 30%. Untreated insomnia can increase your risk for cardiovascular disease (heart attack or stroke), high blood pressure, high blood sugar, depression, anxiety, substance abuse and has a significant impact on quality of life.
